Cleaning Pennies!

April 3, 2020 by BobHagan

CLEANING PENNIES!

Welcome to our first weekly activity!

Let’s do some cleaning while we have so much extra time in hand……sounds boring…it’s not when it is about cleaning pennies! We will do an experiment using various kitchen ingredients/ household supplies to see which one clean dirty pennies the best.  Wait, wait….why do we want to clean the penny?  Well this way we will learn about the penny and what happens to copper when it is exposed to oxygen and the elements. Try to explore few other examples of this reaction around us for example why Statute of Liberty is green?

Let’s get ready to to start our journey to learn oxidation!!

A note to moms, dads & supervising adults: Some of these links go to YouTube. As long as they watch on the webpage, it won’t go to YouTube. Please make sure to monitor your kids as they are watching the attached videos. Things labeled “Primary” is best for grades Kindergarten through 3rd, and things labeled “Intermediate” are best for grades 3rd and above, but you know your kiddos best.

Facts You Didn’t Know about the Penny (Intermediate)

Pennies can turn green. This is caused by oxidation. Learn all about oxidation below.

(Primary &Intermediate)

Time for the experiment!

Alright, it is time for the experiment. The video will go through everything you need and the steps. As a heads up, you’ll need: dirty pennies, small cups or bowls, paper towels, ketchup, vinegar, soda, and any other materials you would like to test.

We would love to hear  about your results! Have Fun!
